What are furloughs? Furloughs are days off without pay. CSUEU agreed to 24 furlough days in the 2009 Fiscal Year, which runs July 2009 to June of 2010. 24 unpaid days works out to a 9.23% reduction in Gross pay, but because the July pay period had already happened, the amount for July was spread across the remaining 11 months of the Fiscal Year, resulting in a 10.07% reduction in your Gross Pay for August 2009 through June 2010. This calculator only deals with the remainder of 2009.
What this is calculating: Because of furloughs, your gross pay is dropping for the last five months of 2009. But because your gross pay is dropping, the amount of taxes paid is also dropping.
This page calculates how much your net pay drops because of the reduction in gross pay, but includes the offset of the reduction in the amount of tax you pay.
* Are Dues based on my Gross Pay or Base Pay? Your dues are actually 1% of your Base Pay, and since Base Pay is not affected by furloughs, your Union dues would not be affected. However, the CSUEU Board of Directors voted to reduce dues by the amount of gross pay reduced by the furloughs, i.e. 10.07%.
